Today's Observation
Lumentum delivered a quarter with revenue more than doubling year-over-year, with AI data center optical interconnect demand as the core driver, and both components and systems businesses exceeding expectations. The company's guidance for next quarter's revenue and earnings is also significantly above market expectations, with management stating that this guidance implies reaching its target operating model more than a quarter ahead of the original plan.
Data in a Minute
undefined FY2026 Q4 net revenue was $1,006.3 million, up 109.3% year-over-year and 24.5% quarter-over-quarter, above the consensus estimate of approximately $985 million.
undefined By segment, components revenue was $649.4 million and systems revenue was $356.9 million, with the two segments combined matching total revenue and both exceeding their respective estimates.
undefined Non-GAAP net income was $326.3 million, with diluted EPS of $3.23, above the consensus estimate of approximately $2.95.
undefined On a GAAP basis, net loss was $7.2 billion and diluted loss per share was $84.65, primarily due to the conversion of some convertible bonds in the quarter, resulting in a one-time non-cash debt extinguishment loss of approximately $7.8 billion, which does not involve operations or cash outflows.
undefined In terms of profitability, Non-GAAP gross margin was 50.4% and operating margin was 36.6%; GAAP gross margin was 47.4% and operating margin was 27.8%.
undefined Full fiscal year FY2026 net revenue was $3.01 billion, up 83.2% year-over-year.
undefined Next quarter guidance: FY2027 Q1 revenue of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion (midpoint $1.250 billion), above the consensus of $1.160 billion; Non-GAAP diluted EPS guidance of $4.05 to $4.35 (midpoint $4.20), above the consensus of $3.63; Non-GAAP operating margin guidance of 39.5% to 40.5%.
undefined The company cited growth drivers including optical circuit switching (OCS) solutions and the 1.6T advancement in cloud module business, increased demand for ultra-high-power CPO lasers, and the first order for ELS modules.
MSX View
Lumentum's performance over the past quarter has been generally solid: revenue more than doubled year-over-year, with another nearly a quarter increase quarter-over-quarter, and both components and systems segments strengthened simultaneously. Non-GAAP gross margin exceeded half, and operating margin approached 37%, with scale expansion and profitability improvement moving in the same direction. The massive $7.2 billion GAAP loss is entirely due to the one-time non-cash treatment of convertible bond conversion, unrelated to operations, but the absolute value is so large that one must first distinguish the basis when reading. What is truly noteworthy is the next quarter guidance: revenue midpoint is about 7.8% above consensus, EPS midpoint about 16% above, and management explicitly stated that it will hit the target model more than a quarter ahead, indicating that the pace of AI data center optical interconnect demand realization is faster than the company's own previous plan. The key variable going forward is how many quarters this outperformance can last, and whether the ramp-up of next-generation products like 1.6T and CPO can sustain it.
