Nexo Australia Launches Crypto-Backed Loans Starting at 0.9% APR

Nexo Australia launched crypto backed credit lines on August 19 after becoming an authorised credit representative under Australia’s consumer credit framework.

Summary

  • Nexo Australia launched crypto backed credit lines after receiving authorization as a registered credit representative.
  • Eligible clients can borrow against supported digital assets without selling them, subject to credit assessments.
  • Advertised annual interest rates range from 0.9% to 21.9%, depending on product and loyalty tier.
  • Regulated loans are provided by Nexo Individual Loans and serviced under Avgi’s Australian credit licence.
  • Nexo Growth offers returns up to 10%, but ownership transfers and capital protection remain absent.

The company said eligible clients can obtain Australian dollars or stablecoins using supported digital assets as collateral. Advertised annual interest rates range from 0.9% to 21.9%, depending on the product and the client’s loyalty tier.

Nexo Australia operates under Credit Representative Number 580430. Its regulated credit products are serviced by Avgi Pty Ltd, which holds Australian Credit Licence 567308, according to the company’s disclosures.

Nexo Australia operates through a licensed provider

Becoming a credit representative does not mean Nexo Australia holds its own Australian credit licence. ASIC guidance allows a company to conduct authorised activities on behalf of an existing licensee.

Nexo’s regulated loans are provided by Nexo Individual Loans Pty Ltd. Avgi services them under its credit licence, while Nexo Australia handles applications, account management and customer support.

Nexo Australia said it is also registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider and belongs to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. AFCA provides an independent process for eligible financial complaints.

The Australian Business Register lists Nexo Australia Pty Ltd as an active Australian private company. Its Australian business number has been active since June 2023.

Credit lines allow borrowing against crypto collateral

Nexo’s credit lines allow eligible customers to borrow without immediately selling their digital assets. Funds are typically available within 24 hours, according to the company.

The products have no fixed term or origination fee. Customers can make flexible repayments and exchange eligible collateral without closing their existing credit line.

However, borrowing against crypto carries liquidation and repayment risks. A decline in collateral value could require a customer to provide more assets or lose part of the pledged collateral. Australia’s MoneySmart service warns that borrowing against investments can increase losses when asset prices fall.

Nexo also introduced Booster, which lets eligible customers increase a digital asset position by as much as three times. The feature uses the newly acquired assets as collateral, adding leverage and increasing exposure to adverse market movements.

Nexo Growth returns with separate risks

The company also reintroduced its yield product as Nexo Growth. It advertises returns of up to 10% annually on supported assets, although rates vary by asset and term.

Flexible Growth accrues returns daily and permits withdrawals on request. Fixed Term Growth requires customers to commit assets for a defined period in exchange for a higher advertised rate.

Nexo states that Growth returns are not guaranteed. Customers transfer ownership of deposited assets to Nexo Australia and receive an unsecured contractual claim in return. The product is not a bank deposit and lacks capital protection.

The distinction matters in Australia. As previously reported, Australia’s High Court ruled that Block Earner’s former yield product required a financial services licence. Nexo says it has applied for an Australian Financial Services Licence, but ASIC has not yet determined that application.

Australia’s crypto credit market is expanding

Nexo’s launch adds another locally structured crypto credit offering after Australia introduced its first Bitcoin backed home loan. The products differ because Nexo offers general liquidity rather than financing tied specifically to property.

The company has not disclosed its expected loan volume, collateral requirements for individual assets or anticipated Australian customer numbers. Its claim that nearly one in three Australians owns cryptocurrency came from external research cited in the announcement.

Nexo said it plans to combine credit, exchange, yield and loyalty services through one Australian platform. Access will remain subject to eligibility checks, credit criteria and product terms.
